Multicultural Scholarship Honors Dean Donald DeHayes

Multicultural Scholarship Honors Dean Donald DeHayes

An anonymous donor has established an endowed scholarship in the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Vermont and named it in honor of the schools dean, Donald H. DeHayes.

The Donald H. DeHayes Multicultural Scholarship will provide annual scholarship assistance to one or more full-time undergraduate or graduate students in The Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources. Awards will be based on the students academic ability, financial need, commitment to a career in the environment and natural resources, and propensity to advance the Universitys goal of creating a diverse community. Preference may be given to inner-city students and students from The High School for Environmental Studies in New York City, where the Rubenstein School recruits students annually. DeHayes took the lead in forging close ties between UVM and the inner-city environmental school, to the benefit of both institutions. He has long sought to establish an endowed scholarship supporting multicultural diversity in the Rubenstein School student body and took advantage of the opportunity to do so when the donor offered to support whatever priority the dean chose to advance.

Students awarded bursaries under Security Scholarship Programme

Fifteen students from schools in Kingstons inner cities received bursaries valued at $15,000 each on Friday, under the governments Safety and Security Scholarship Programme.

Junior minister in the Ministry of National Security Dr Donald Rhodd said the initiative was timely, particularly in light of research data which estimates that there are approximately 160,000 unattached youths on the island, meaning that they are not in school, they are not in any training institution, employed or seeking employment.

Rhodd, who was addressing the programmes awards luncheon at the Knutsford Court Hotel in the capital, noted that youths needed guidance, and access to opportunities as this was an effective way to shield them from recruitment by organised criminal syndicates.

Scholarship opens college doors

Right into 11th grade, Amanda Borsotti of Lee didnt see college as a possible option because of her familys finances.

Then the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship entered the equation, and with the encouragement of her friends and coaches, today she is in her freshman year as a sociology major at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

It actually helped me a lot, Borsotti said. Financially, it was a big part of deciding what college I could go to. Right to my junior year in high school, I never really thought of it as a possibility. Now Im the fist one from my family to go to college.

Harper receives Safken scholarship

Harper receives Safken scholarship

In some ways, Austin Harper reminds Linda Mulleady of her own son.

It only seems fitting the Fruita Monument High School senior is the recipient of the first Sam Safken Memorial Scholarship.

There is something about the way he looked, Mulleady said. He is a clean-cut young man and has the same pale skin. He is real sweet and quiet.

Sam was always humble. He was never boastful. Hed get mad at me telling people how good he is. Hed say, Mom, you dont have to toot your own horn when youre good.
