Buchanan urges high scholarship standards

Buchanan urges high scholarship standards

University of Wyoming President Tom Buchanan encouraged a Senate committee Wednesday to set high standards for the states Hathaway Scholarship recipients.

The House recently voted to allow students who pass only basic classes required for high school graduation to have access to some scholarship funds, rejecting a proposal from a joint interim committee that called for limiting the scholarship in the future to students who complete a success curriculum that included specified math and science courses.

Students who arrive at UW with challenging high school coursework, consistent with that proposed in the original Hathaway legislation, do better and are more likely to graduate than those with high GPAs based on less-challenging coursework, Buchanan said. We know with certainty that students benefit with parents or others challenging them to take rigorous coursework.

Ferguson-Proffit Nursing Scholarship Established Through DSLCC Educational Foundation

Ferguson-Proffit Nursing Scholarship Established Through DSLCC Educational Foundation

Donna Proffit Vaughn of Eagle Rock and her family have established, through the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation, the Ferguson-Proffit Nursing Scholarship. The scholarship is given in honor and in memory of Eunice F. and Melvin F. Proffit from their daughter, Donna, and son-in-law, Stephen Vaughn, and grandchildren Ehren Vaughn, Tyler Vaughn, Heather Vaughn Kefir and Stephanie Vaughn.

Eunice Ferguson Proffit was a graduate of Buchanan High School in Buchanan, and a registered nurse and graduate of the former Lewis-Gale School of Nursing in Roanoke. Melvin F. Proffit was a graduate of Jefferson High School in Roanoke, and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Armys 116th Infantry, 29th Division. He retired as a manager of Lowes and Company.

Regarding their decision to create the scholarship, Vaughn commented, Having worked as a teacher and a guidance counselor for thirty years in the Botetourt County School System, the Clifton Forge School System, and the Alleghany County School System, I have observed first-hand just how valuable a nursing education at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College can be. I became very familiar with the nursing program when the area school systems were trying to start a school nurse program. The student nurses from DSLCC, with supervision from their nursing instructors, served as our first school nurses while grants for a full-time program were being located, written, and finally awarded. Currently, many of our school nurses in several counties are graduates from the DSLCC nursing program.

Operation Education: University of Idaho Scholarship Recipient Moves From Fear to Career

Operation Education: University of Idaho Scholarship Recipient Moves From Fear to Career

University of Idaho student Tom Prewitt didnt know fear until his Army unit boarded a plane in Germany in January 2002. Cpl. Prewitts unit was the first Army unit to enter the Afghanistan war zone in January 2002.

We had to load our M16s prior to takeoff, and when we landed, we were told by the Air Force to hurry up and get off their plane, said Prewitt. Thats when the danger of the situation sunk in.

A heavy construction equipment operator for the Armys 101st Airborne Division, Prewitt and his unit were responsible for reconstructing and maintaining the runway in Kandahar in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Their task was crucial to Operation Anaconda, the first large-scale battle in Afghanistan to involve a large number of U.S. conventional forces – or non-Special Forces – that participated in direct combat activities. The 101st is an air assault division that can deploy anywhere within 36 hours. Prewitt and his unit ensured some 1,700 air-lifted troops had an operable air field from which to take off and land.
