Scholarship Established In Memory Of Former Student

Friends and family of Michael A. Scillitani, III, have established a scholarship fund in honor of the Garden City High School graduate, who attended Garden City Schools from kindergarten through 12th grade. Michael was enrolled at Palm Beach Community College and about to transfer to Florida Atlantic University as an accounting major when he was killed in an automobile accident in 2005

Those who knew Michael remember him as a great lover of music with a wonderful sense of humor and an infectious zest for life, according to his friend, Karen Cooney, Garden City High School Class of 2002. Soon after Michaels death, a group of his friends led by Ms. Cooney approached Michaels mother, Donna Emanuele, about the possibility of commemorating her son.

A fundraiser and many discussions about a fitting memorial followed. When I think of Michael I always remember how much he made me laugh and his joy in life, Ms. Cooney said. We decided that the best way we could honor Michael would be to establish a scholarship for students who shared his enthusiasm and love for music.

High School Guidance Counselors Remove Hurdle for Scholarship Applicants.

High School Guidance Counselors Remove Hurdle for Scholarship Applicants.

Avar Press, sponsor of the 2nd annual Xen Literary Scholarship Competition for High School Students, has already mailed out many free copies of Xen by D.J. Solomon to the high school libraries of schools whose guidance departments have listed the competition on their websites.

Melissa Kaufman, CEO of Avar Press, indicates that this is another way that Avar Press can remove obstacles to entering this scholarship competition for all interested students. There is no fee to enter the competition and cash awards ranging from $300-$500 are made directly to the winning students. The deadline for entries is May 15, 2007.

Xen is the story of a misanthropic scientist who rids the world of evil, marking an end to hate and prejudice. He concludes that Mankind is innately flawed and cannot be fixed; that he must be scrapped for a superior species that is dominated by women. Thus the world that he creates is a matriarchy–free of hate, prejudice, racism, sexism, and war. It is a thought provoking work which challenges the reader to examine his own unrealized prejudices
